However, until now, the total number of missing persons has yet to be ascertained.

Survivors said the ship had left Gambia on November 27.

There was no immediate statement from the authorities in Gambia, where tens of thousands of people departed in hopes of reaching Europe in recent years. Despite its small size, more than 35,000 Gambians arrived in Europe between 2014 and 2018, according to UN migration agents.
